Learn, collaborate and contribute to atmospheric research

Our research group welcomes undergraduate and postgraduate students, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists for internships, research placements, thesis projects, and academic visits.

Through a dynamic research environment and access to state-of-the-art observational facilities, modelling systems, and environmental datasets, visitors have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research in atmospheric science, air quality, climate change, environmental monitoring, and related disciplines.

We support MSc and PhD theses, short- and long-term research visits, postdoctoral training, and collaborative exchanges with universities and research institutions in Greece and internationally, fostering scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional development.

Training the next generation of atmospheric scientists

Students and researchers from universities across Europe and beyond have joined APCG for research placements spanning atmospheric observations, emission inventories, air-quality modelling and environmental data analysis.

2026

High-Resolution Urban Emission Inventories for Air Quality Modelling

February – August 2026
Master's Student
Intern

Leo Pillac-Mage

Master's Student
École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland

Development and application of high-resolution urban emission inventories for atmospheric chemistry and air-quality modelling.

Mr. Pillac-Mage's work focused on upgrading and applying the UrbEm downscaling tool to produce reproducible, sector- and pollutant-specific urban emission inventories at a 100 m resolution from the CAMS regional inventory.

The enhanced workflow was evaluated against independent city inventories and measured pollutant profiles and integrated into an atmospheric chemistry transport model for Athens, Ioannina and Kozani.

The tool was used within the Metronome project to develop and assess urban air-pollution mitigation scenarios.

His diploma thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Athanasios Nenes (EPFL), Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos and Dr. Eleni Athanasopoulou (NOA).

2025

Atmospheric Chemistry and Urban Air Quality Modelling

January – June 2025
Erasmus+
Intern

Christina Grammatikopoulou

Erasmus+ Student
Technological University Dublin, Ireland

Hands-on training combining atmospheric chemistry measurements, data analysis and city-scale air-quality modelling over Athens.

Ms. Grammatikopoulou gained hands-on experience in atmospheric chemistry by receiving training at NOA's central instrumentation facilities, comparing air-pollution measurements with city-scale model outputs using Python, NCL and R, and running sensitivity scenarios with EPISODE-CityChem over Athens.

The placement, under the guidance of Dr. Stelios Myriokefalitakis and with the support of the Atmospheric Modelling Team of APCG, offered Christina valuable experience across the full chain from observations to atmospheric modelling, while contributing to her preparation for future doctoral studies.

Research Internship

Atmospheric Observations and Air Quality Analysis

Undergraduate
Intern

Konstantina Kairaktidi

Undergraduate Student
Department of Physics, University of Patras, Greece

Practical experience in atmospheric measurements, air-quality analysis and aerosol physical and optical characterization.

Ms. Kairaktidi participated in the measurement and analysis of air pollutants and atmospheric aerosol properties using advanced environmental monitoring instrumentation.

The internship provided hands-on experience in atmospheric observations, air quality data analysis, and the characterization of aerosol physical and optical properties, contributing to research on urban air pollution and atmospheric processes.

2017

Numerical Simulation of Atmospheric Pollution in Algeria

2017
Research Visit
Intern

Dr. Nassima Oucher

Department of Environmental Engineering
National Polytechnic School of Algiers, Algeria

Numerical simulation of atmospheric pollution over Algeria using advanced atmospheric modelling tools.

Dr. Nassima Oucher worked on the numerical simulation of atmospheric pollution over Algeria using advanced atmospheric modelling tools.

The internship promoted knowledge exchange in air quality modelling and strengthened scientific collaboration between the two institutions.

2016

The Impact of a Peri-Urban Fire Event on Urban Air Pollution

2016
Undergraduate
Intern

Faidra-Aikaterini Kozonaki

Undergraduate Student
Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, Greece

Atmospheric modelling of aerosol emissions from a peri-urban fire using the CAMx photochemical model.

Ms. Kozonaki worked on numerical modelling of aerosol emissions from a point source, including the installation, adaptation and application of the CAMx photochemical model.

This work was followed by her undergraduate thesis, entitled "The impact of a peri-urban fire event on urban air pollution" , supervised by Prof. Maria Kanakidou, with Dr. Eleni Athanasopoulou contributing to the thesis supervision.
