A sharp decline in greenhouse gas emissions, linked to climate change, was observed internationally during the period of traffic restrictions due to coronavirus. Our research demonstrated that emissions decreased in Athens and in many cities at levels of 50% or more, mainly due to the restriction of car travel. However, despite the side benefits of the pandemic that show a way to deal with the climate crisis, the risk of returning to “business as usual” still remains.
