The Hellenic Committee of the Blue Shield in collaboration with the University of Nicosia and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens organize a series of webinars in order to raise awareness for the protection of cultural heritage in emergency situations, such in cases of armed conflict and environmental disasters.
The Greek Group of Earth Observation Office (GGO) on 9 March 2021 participated in this interdisciplinary event entitled “Cultural Heritage and Climate Change” presenting the Community Activity “Urban Heritage Climate Observatory” and discussing the management of the evolving challenges of Cultural Heritage protection.
Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos, Director of the GGO, introduced the goal, participation profile, activities, main output and timeline of the newly established GEO Community Activity while showing some relevant examples of the great potential that Earth Observation could bring to World Heritage protection under the urgency of Climate Change.
The organizing institutions’ initiative seeks to bring together academics, students, practitioners, professionals of cultural institutions, representatives from NGOs, policy makers and representatives of the civil society from Greece, Cyprus and other countries, in order to discuss the current challenges in areas that underpin cultural heritage protection in emergency situations.
